Family Guardian Chosen as Finalist for CTIA Award

NQ Mobile’s proud to announce that our popular app, Family Guardian, was chosen asEmerging Technology (E-Tech) Awards competition. CTIA–The Wireless Association® is an international organization representing the wireless communications industry.

Why are we excited?

Each year, CTIA E-Tech Awards honors the most innovative new wireless products and services in mobile apps and consumer electronics. The winners will be announced in May at CTIA 2013™ in Las Vegas. Nearly 300 entries were judged by a panel of highly respected industry experts, reporters and analysts. Submissions were scored on innovation, functionality, technological importance, implementation and overall “wow” factor. Family  Guardian, in our opinion, reflects all of these qualities, and more.

What’s great about Family Guardian?

Family Guardian also earned the Parent Tested Parent Approved (PTPA) seal of approval in March. Why is it getting so much attention? It’s a product that allows mobile parents and children to be connected. With so many kids owning mobile devices, Family Guardian gives parents the security and comfort of being able to transparently manage and monitor their children’s mobile activities. Parents are able to rest assured that their kids are having a safe and positive mobile experience.

Between now and May 20, CTIA’s website visitors may vote for the “Best Online Pick” at  www.ctiashow.com/awards.  Those attending CTIA 2013 will be voting onsite, via text message, for Best in Show.

It’s a win-win

We appreciate the high praise Family Guardian receives from professionals, parents and mobile users around the globe. It’s our way of offering peace and safety to families in a mobile world that can be confusing and sometimes risky.

Do your kids own a mobile phone? Are you perfectly comfortable about what they’re seeing, to whom they’re talking and how much time they’re spending on the phone?  Share your stories with us on our blog or join the conversation on Facebook. We’d love to hear from you.

Real Parents Award NQ Family Guardian the PTPA “Most Trusted” Seal

We already knew the truth about Family Guardian. But now, twenty thousand unbiased parents have awarded NQ Mobile’s Family Guardian their highest rating of excellence through PTPA Media Inc. (Parent Tested, Parent Approved).

When parents see our PTPA Winner’s seal on Family Guardian, they can rest assured they’ve found a high-quality product that’s been given an emphatic seal of approval by other parents. It’s PTPA’s mission to discover the finest parenting products by letting real consumers test and evaluate them in the privacy of their own homes. Independent parent volunteers choose the winners, based on merit and user experience.

Parent testers are not influenced by advertising or commercial interests,so the PTPA Winner’s seal means this is a product parents can really trust.

This is a proud win for NQ Mobile because, as our own Victoria Repice commented, “As mobile devices continue to increase in popularity and replace other connected devices, safety for families and individuals will continue to be a paramount concern. NQ Family Guardian allows parents to unobtrusively manage their kids’ mobile phone usage, while also ensuring a safe and fun experience.”

When consumers search for our Seal of Approval on product packaging and web sites, they are essentially searching for validation from their peers.  Their peers will have objectively tested and approved these products based on their performance in a real life environment. That type of resource for families is priceless.

Apps Collect Our Data. How Do They Use It?

Most mobile users know that apps frequently collect private information. While it’s true some people aren’t aware of it, most who are aware tend to be indifferent to the idea. But, don’t we deserve a little more info about what app makers actually do with the data they extract from our mobile devices?

An article by NBC’s Bob Sullivan  describes a flashlight app that tracks a smartphone user’s location. It was surprising to many folks to find out that such a handy, seemingly harmless app would be tracking their physical whereabouts, and you have to wonder why an app as simple as a flashlight would need to know that. What’s more distressing is many apps collect device IDs, photos, contacts and even our gender.

Jason Hong at Carnegie Mellon University’s Human-Computer Interaction Institute revealed that users don’t care as much about what apps do with our data, as we do about being kept in the dark and being surprised about it.  When seemingly innocuous apps want user data like our geographical location, like the “flashlight” example, it’s a natural response to be suspicious.

Here are a few reasons why personal data is collected:

  1. Your data can help app makers to make important decisions related to future feature enhancements.  These features may help the app to work for you in a more personalized way.
  2. Some apps gather your personal data so that they can target specific ads to you. If your data shows you meet certain criteria, advertisers will tailor their marketing efforts accordingly.
  3. In the case of a malicious app, your personal data could be sold or used for illegal purposes. For example, this type of app might send text messages without your consent to premium numbers. In such instances some users have reported being charged as much as $10 per message. Getting access to your contact list can be a goldmine for malware authors and spammers.

Data gathering doesn’t always have a sinister purpose, but unfortunately we usually aren’t informed why it’s needed. It’s reasonable to wonder how our private information will be used.

Although not required to say why, mobile apps most often warn us when they’re going to collect our information, and they often even specify what data they’ll take. The downside is that we aren’t given a choice – we can either agree to the exchange of data, or pass on downloading the app. That’s not satisfactory to most of us, and perhaps it will change eventually. But, for now, developers aren’t required to give us a choice and the research shows most of us are still willing to take the risk.

As users, what’s the best practice? Make it a habit to read the permission screens on all apps you download.  Make a conscious decision about whether you want to give away the information wanted by the app. If you can’t understand or interpret the permission screen, go to the apps’ website, if it has one, and see if you can get more information before downloading. Make sure you have a strong mobile security app on board to catch any malicious code.

Have you used apps that surprised you with how much or what type of data they want to collect? Tell us about your experiences on our blog, or join us on Facebook.

NQ Mobile’s third quarter financial results are out.  In all modesty, we have to report that we’ve exceeded our own expectations – again. In a conference call conducted Monday, (11/12/2012), Co-Chief Executives Omar Khan and Dr. Henry Lin, and Chief Financial Officer, Suhai Ji discussed the company’s revenues, its financial status, its recent acquisitions and expectations for the future.

The discussion indicates that the explosive increase of smartphone sales, as well as some strategic growth moves have resulted in NQ Mobile’s consistent rise to the top as a robustly successful global company.  From our news release:

Net revenues increased 127.4% year-over-year to $25.8 million from $11.3 million in the corresponding period of 2011, exceeding the high end of the Company’s previous guidance of $24 million to $25 million.  Excluding revenue contribution of $4.5 million from the recently acquired Beijing NationSky Network Technology, Inc. Suhai Ji told conference participants that Monday’s announcement marks the sixth consecutive quarter since NQ went public that we’ve delivered above and beyond our promises to shareholders. He, too, cites the “continued proliferation of mobile internet applications and increased awareness of mobile security among consumers worldwide,” as well as considerable revenue from the recently acquired NationSky, as factors in this quarter’s success.
